Originally named Bahia Formosa, or "Beautiful Bay," by Portuguese explorers, Plettenberg Bay has a fascinating history. In 1778, it was renamed after Baron Joachim van Plettenberg, a Dutch governor. It later grew into a bustling timber and maritime trade hub, leaving behind relics of shipwrecks and colonial heritage.
Plettenberg Bay is easily accessible by car and has its own regional airport. Located along the N2 highway, it's approximately 600 km from Cape Town and 210 km from Port Elizabeth.
